The Practical Problems with Selfishness
And the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper meet for him.” - Genesis 2:18 KJV. The subsequent scriptures talk about God making the animals and telling Adam to go name them all. The first helper for man wasn’t a woman, it was a job. Fast forward to Genesis 4:7 KJV, “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.” Now we see Cain, the first human to commit murder, on the cusp of considering to do so. Spoiler alert, he kills his own brother.
An interesting point made in Genesis 4:7 that can be paralleled to Genesis 3:16, is that Cain had an opportunity to rule over the unction of murder.
Why do you fight and argue among yourselves? Isn’t it because of your sinful desires? They fight within you. 2 You want something, but you don’t have it. So you kill. You want what others have, but you can’t get what you want. So you argue and fight. You don’t have what you want, because you don’t ask God. 3 When you do ask for something, you don’t receive it. That’s because you ask for the wrong reason. You want to spend your money on your sinful pleasures. – James 4: 1-3 NRIV
The problem with selfishness is that it’s sinful. It’s a moral debt. A selfish person has transgressed against God and his fellow human.
